Why The Braves Will Cover The Spread/Win
Max Fried is one of the better pitchers in baseball. He is currently 5-2 with a 2.97 ERA, and a 1.05 WHIP. Along with that, opponents are batting just .205 off of Fried. In the month of May especially, Fried has been on a tear. Fried has eight innings and nine innings pitched against the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs in his last two starts. In those games, Fried has combined for 10 hits allowed, one earned run, and 15 strikeouts to just one walk. He is really feeling it right now, and he comes into this game with a lot of momentum. If Fried can keep that up, the Braves are going to have no problem beating the Red Sox.
Looking at the advanced stats, the Red Sox are in the bottom-10 of the MLB in both whiff percentage and chase percentage. They will chase pitches off the plate, and they will swing and miss at those. In fact, the Red Sox have the 10th-lowest chase contact percentage, and the fourth-lowest zone contact percentage. If Fried is one with his arsenal of pitches, the Red Sox are going to have a lot of trouble in this game. As long as Fried continues to do what he does, the Braves are going to win this game.
Why The Red Sox Will Cover The Spread/Win
Kutter Crawford has cooled off a bit since his hot start to the season, but his overall numbers are still pretty good. He owns a 3.29 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. He is going through a bit of a rough stretch, but he does have a start against the Braves already this season, and he was very good in it. In the Red Sox loss, Crawford threw six innings, allowed just five hits, two runs, and struck out six.
Crawford was able to keep his team in the game, and give the Red Sox a chance to a win against a very good offensive team. Now, Matt Olson is not having the best year, and Ronald Acuna just tore his ACL, so Crawford should be able to have a good game. If he has another performance like that, the Red Sox will be able to keep this game within a run.
Final Braves-Red Sox Prediction & Pick
These are two good teams, and the Braves have already beaten the Red Sox twice at home this season. Those were close games, and I expect this one to be close, as well. However, I like the Braves to win this game straight up. Max Fried is pitching like a madman right now, and he should be able to continue that in this game.
