The San Diego Padres are set to face the New York Mets this weekend. With that said, it’s a good time to check out our MLB odds series, which includes our Padres-Mets prediction and pick we have laid out below.

The San Diego Padres, sitting at 52-42, will travel to the East Coast to take on the New York Mets in a weekend series. San Diego is in second place in the NL West, behind the powerhouse LA Dodgers, but is currently in second place in the Wild Card race.

The NL East-leading New York Mets have been successful without their star pitcher Jacob DeGrom for the entire season. New York has navigated multiple injuries on their way to a 58-35 record.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

San Diego has been solid away from Petco this season, with a 27-21 road record. Thanks to a pitching staff that ranks tenth with a 3.77 ERA, the Padres have neutralized opponents. Yu Darvish is sent to the mound Friday night, bringing with him a 3.41 ERA and minuscule 0.99 WHIP. In seven career games against the Mets, Darvish owns a sparkling 2.76 ERA, including seven shutout innings last month. Behind Darvish is a solidly average bullpen, rocking a 3.85 ERA, good for 15th in baseball. However, relievers Nabil Crismatt (2.93 ERA in 40.1 innings) and Taylor Rogers (26 saves) have provided dominant relief.

At the plate, San Diego has simply struggled. Despite the 16th best batting average (.241), San Diego's power has been nonexistent, with just 77 home runs. Spark plug Fernando Tatis, Jr.'s absence has been felt deeply, although Manny Machado has picked up the slack, producing a .303/.377/.513 slash line with 15 home runs. Machado and Luke Voit (12 home runs) are the most potent hitters in this lineup. To supplement the lack of power, San Diego has displayed brilliant patience, walking 326 times, tied for sixth in baseball. The good news is Darvish is unlikely to give up a ton of runs, so the offensive bar to clear is not too high.

Why The Mets Could Cover The Spread

The New York Mets appear to be rejuvenated under new owner Steve Cohen. Cohen's willingness to spend money, a nice transition from the previous regime, has made the Mets into a playoff contender, a place the team has not gone since 2016. Tonight, big offseason addition and former division rival Max Scherzer is on the bump. Scherzer has been dominant when healthy this season, with a 2.69 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 69 innings. After missing most of May and all of June, Scherzer has returned with a vengeance in July, registering a 1.40 ERA in 19.1 innings and a 31:1 K/BB ratio. In other words, Scherzer has been otherworldly this month.

The Mets possess one of baseball's better offenses, with a .252/.324/.397 slash line. Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Eduardo Escobar, the only three players with double-digit home runs, have combined for 51 of the team's 92 home runs. Given the star pitching matchup, not many offensive fireworks are needed. The Mets are also one of baseball's best at limiting strikeouts, punching out just 710 times on the season, the fifth lowest mark.

Final Padres-Mets Prediction & Pick

This is a great pitching matchup between two lackluster offenses. Give me the fire-breathing Max Scherzer against just about anyone in baseball.

Final Padres-Mets Prediction & Pick: Mets -1.5 (+122), under 7 (-110)
