The Edmonton Oilers head into Winnipeg for this matinee matchup as they look to improve on their five-game win streak under new head coach Jay Woodcroft, against the Jets. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with an Oilers-Jets prediction and pick.
If the playoffs were to start right now, the Oilers would be in 3rd place in the Pacific Division (57 points) while the Jets would be four spots out of the playoffs (52 points). There are only five points separating these two teams from each other and the difference would drastically determine a playoff spot. It's going to be a tough playoff race for the Western Conference, especially when we get closer to the trade deadline.

Why The Oilers Can Cover The Spread/Win
Article Continues BelowNew head coaching hire Jay Woodcroft has made an excellent start with Edmonton so far as the Oilers are now 5-0 with him under the helm. Granted, the Oilers had some relatively easy competition within that time but still show leadership as they take on another team that's outside of playoff contentions, the Winnipeg Jets. Evander Kane has shown his worth so far with the Oilers as he's put up eight points in his nine games with the team so far. Mike Smith will likely get the start between the pipes tonight for the Oilers as he has been playing outstanding as of late. He is up to a .904 save percentage and allowing 3.31 goals against this season. Smith will continue to look up from here as the Oilers will continue to invest all their star power in their offense, which ultimately is what wins games for this squad.
Why The Jets Can Cover The Spread/Win
The Winnipeg Jets are 4-1-1 in their last six games and are dying for improvement. On paper, the Jets are a very solid unit, but with Nikolaj Ehlers and Cole Perfetti out of the lineup tonight, it's tough to argue they have the manpower to stop this Edmonton train. However, goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will look to defend the home crease tonight as he is highly considered one of the top netminders in the league, based on pure talent. He's currently allowing 2.81 goals against per game with a .913 save percentage. The Jets will look to lean very heavily on Hellebuyck tonight as he needs to shut the door on a terrifying Edmonton offensive unit.
Final Oilers-Jets Prediction & Pick
This game should be close and could very easily be high-scoring if both teams can put pucks in the back of the net. However, the Oilers have found a hot streak under their new head coach, and I think they'll keep it going tonight on the road. Sure, they have their flaws defensively, and it ultimately could cost them as the Jets have a huge edge in goaltending, but I think -128 is still good enough value to ride the hot hand of Connor McDavid and company.
Final Oilers-Jets Prediction & Pick: Edmonton Oilers (-126)
