The Oregon Ducks have been playing most of the season without a number of players, chiefly their best big men N'Faly Dante and Nate Bittle. Coach Dana Altman has had to work around the lack of his star bigs. He was also without young star guard Jackson Shelstad for the first few weeks of the campaign before he came aboard in December. Oregon struggled early, losing to Santa Clara and then getting blasted by Syracuse, but since then the Ducks have been very good. They are 5-0 in Pac-12 play, leading conference favorite Arizona by multiple games due to the Wildcats' losses against Stanford and Washington State. Oregon might not be the favorite to win the Pac-12 right now, but if the Ducks can continue to maintain a multi-game lead in the standings, Arizona will feel more and more pressure to keep pace. The Wildcats would have less margin for error, and with another few slip-ups, the Cats would cede leverage to an Oregon team which keeps finding ways to win.

Oregon winning the last Pac-12 basketball season — before UO heads to the Big Ten along with Washington, USC, and UCLA, and before Arizona joins Arizona State, Utah, and Colorado in the Big 12 — would be a remarkable plot twist and a massive surprise to college basketball experts everywhere. Oregon was generally picked fourth or fifth in most preseason polls behind Arizona, USC, and UCLA. Dana Altman has missed the last two NCAA Tournaments and could be authoring one of his more special seasons in Eugene. Let's see, however, if the Ducks can go into Boulder — historically a very tough place for them to win — and keep their unbeaten Pac-12 record intact.

Why Oregon Could Cover the Spread

The Colorado Buffaloes have been shaky for much of the season. Colorado did blow out the Miami Hurricanes, but that's the only truly impressive part of this team's resume. Most of the rest of the schedule contains wins over grossly inferior opponents, and the Buffaloes have lost to California, Arizona State, and Florida State. There are some glaring weak spots on this resume, and beyond the actual win-loss results, CU looked bad in the first half of its game against shorthanded USC this past Saturday night before scrambling in the second half to win. This is not a team which is putting all the pieces together. Colorado had considerable buzz before the season as a team which might be able to make a run to the Sweet 16, but as it is, the Buffs are a bubble team and will have to work just to make the NCAA Tournament. Oregon has been a better team than Colorado over the past month. Dana Altman is coaching a lot better than Tad Boyle is. Oregon is also getting healthier and is able to put its best players on the court for one of the few times all season. There's a lot which lines up favorably for UO here, and the Ducks are getting 6.5 points? Wow. That seems like a bargain.

Why Colorado Could Cover the Spread

The Buffaloes plainly need this game more than Oregon, being three games behind the Ducks in the loss column of the Pac-12 standings. The game is at home in Boulder. Colorado will be desperate, and Oregon is due for a bad Pac-12 game.

Final Oregon-Colorado Prediction & Pick

The Ducks might not win outright, but they should keep this game close. Take Oregon plus the points.

Final Oregon-Colorado Prediction & Pick: Oregon +6.5
