Why The Phillies Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Phillies have Sanchez on the mound, and he is playing very well. He has a 3.22 ERA, and he has allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of his seven outings. What is even more impressive is Sanchez has allowed just one home run all season. Sanchez should be able to shut down the Mets in this game if he continues to pitch as he has been. This is especially true considering the Mets are not the best offensive team. In fact, the Mets are 18th in the MLB in slugging percentage, so they do lack some power.
Sanchez is a big ground ball pitcher, and he generates a lot of weak contact. The Mets hit the ball on the ground a majority of the time, so Sanchez should get plenty of ground balls in this game. Along with that, the Mets have the ninth-lowest hard hit percentage. It would not be surprising to see Sanchez pitch a good game against an average offense in this one.
Why The Mets Will Cover The Spread/Win
Manaea is having a good season on the bump. He has a 3.31 ERA, and has also allowed just one home run. Manaea's advanced stats seem to indicate a bit of luck, but that should not take away from the season he is having at the moment. He keeps hitters off balance, and opponents have an xSLG of .396 off him. Manaea needs to keep the Phillies off balance in this one. The Phillies have a dangerous lineup, so Manaea needs to keep mixing his pitches well. If he does this, the Mets will be able to win this game.
The Mets do a great job not striking out offensively. Sanchez is not a huge strikeout pitcher, so the Mets should be able to put the ball in play often. Putting the ball in play will help the Mets put pressure on the Phillies and score some runs. The Mets have struck out less than seven times 15 times this season, and they are 11-4 in those games. If they can continue not striking out, they will be able to win this game.
