Why The Phillies Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Phillies are fighting with the Yankees as the best team in the MLB and they have a 45-20 record. The bats are a top-five unit in the MLB, while their pitching is the second-best, only behind the Yankees. On offense, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, JT Realmuto, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, Nick Castellanos, and Alec Bohm have been the big standouts on a great offense. The pitching of Ranger Suarez, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, and Spencer Turnbull have made up one great pitching staff. The Phillies have been a force this season and this is a huge series for them in Boston.

The Phillies are starting Cristopher Sanchez as pitcher where he has a 3-3 record, a 2.71 ERA, and a 1.34 WHIP. Through 66.1 innings, Sanchez has allowed 25 runs on 68 hits with 21 walks and 59 strikeouts. The Phillies are 6-6 in the 12 games that he's started in this season. Sanchez has been a huge key for the Phillies as a pitcher. This is a difficult matchup against a Red Sox offense that has started to gain some momentum recently.

The offense for the Phillies has been great this season. The Phillies are sixth in the MLB in team batting average at .255 after finishing last season at .256. Alec Bohm and Bryce Harper lead the way for the Phillies behind the plate. Bohm leads the way in batting average at .291, in RBI at 51, and in hits at 71. Then, Harper leads the way in home runs at 15 and in OBP at .388. The Phillies offense gets a decent matchup against Pivetta because he has been a key piece that has made up a great pitching staff in Boston.

Why The Red Sox Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Red Sox have been very average overall and come in with a 33-33 record. They just won a game to break a two-game losing streak. Statistically, the Red Sox are in the top 10 of the MLB behind the plate and then are top five in pitching on the mound. Tyler O'Neill, Triston Casas, Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Rafael Devers are all talented players and have been solid to a varying degree behind the plate so far this season. When it comes to their pitching Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, Nick Pivetta, and Garrett Whitlock despite his current injury have made up a great pitching staff with all of them having varying levels of great to boost their pitching.

The Red Sox are starting Nick Pivetta as pitcher where he has a 3-4 record, a 3.40 ERA, and a 0.94 WHIP. He has allowed 16 runs on 31 hits with nine walks and 51 strikeouts through 42.1 total innings this season. Through the eight games that he has started in this year the Red Sox are 4-4. Pivetta is not on the level of the other pitchers on the staff but has been very good. This is a huge matchup against the Phillies offense with how hot they have been.

The Red Sox's offense has been solid this season. They are ninth in team batting average at .247 after finishing last season at .258. The offense is led by Rafael Devers, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Jarren Duran in most batting categories behind the plate. Devers leads in batting average at .284, in home runs at 13, and in OBP at .375. Rafaela leads in RBI at 37, and then Duran in total hits at 71. The Red Sox are solid behind the plate, but Pivetta has been very good on the mound for the Phillies.

Final Phillies-Red Sox Prediction & Pick

The better team across the board is the Phillies in this matchup. They have the better pitcher in Sanchez and they have the better offense behind the plate. The Red Sox have been playing well on offense and Pivetta is a very good pitcher, but the Phillies are too much in this matchup. Expect them to win and cover, even with the game in Boston.
