Why The Reds Could Cover The Spread

As mentioned, the Reds have been dominated by the Brewers this season. However, they are facing a pitcher that they have been able to get to. One of their wins has come when Rea was the starting pitcher. Cincinnati has faced Rea twice, and they should have confidence facing him in this game. The Reds have 13 hits in 9 2/3 innings off Rea, and they have scored eight runs. Cincinnati has been able to hit Rea well this season, and this game should not be any different. The Reds have a good offense, and are coming off a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks, so they are hot. If the Reds can stay hot and keep hitting, they should be able to cover this spread.

Ashcraft was roughed up in his first start against the Brewers, but he was able to shut them down just 10 days ago. Ashcraft gave up just one run on five hits in six innings of work against Milwaukee. Including this start, Ashcraft has had an awesome month of July. In three starts, he has allowed just four runs on 17 hits. His strikeout numbers are not good, but if he can continue getting weaker contact, the Reds will be just fine with him on the mound.

Why The Brewers Could Cover The Spread

As mentioned, the Brewers were shut down by Ashcraft in the last game. However, they still won. They were also able to crush Ashcraft in June. They scored 10 runs on nine hits in just four innings of work by Ashcraft. The Brewers are not the best offensive team, but they should feel comfortable since they were able have that type of game off Ashcraft before.

Rea has not been able to pitch well against the Reds, but as a pitching staff, the Brewers are solid. Milwaukee is dominating the Reds on the mound, and the bullpen is not having any problem. If the Rea can get the ball to the bullpen with a lead or a tie game, the Brewers should be able to win this game. Devin Williams, Joel Payamps, Elvis Peguero, and Holby Milner have combined to pitch 21 innings and allow just two runs on four hits while striking out 34 against the Reds. Getting the ball to these guys with the lead is going to be key in this game.

Final Reds-Brewers Prediction & Pick

This should be a close game. It is a battle between two teams fighting for first place in the NL Central. The Brewers lead the Reds by half a game coming into this series. These three games are very important, and the Brewers could create some distance if they continue to play well. However, the Reds could take back their spot at the top of the division. I think that is what happens in this game. The Reds have been able to get to Rea, and I do not think that changes. I expect Cincinnati to at least keep this game close.

Final Reds-Brewers Prediction & Pick: Reds +1.5 (-105), Under 9 (-102)
