On the first official day that NFL free agents can be signed, the Buffalo Bills remained active and signed former Washington Redskins defensive end Trent Murphy to a three-year, $21 million contract on Wednesday afternoon.

ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the details of Murphy's contract with the Bills on Twitter earlier today.

Murphy, who did not play the entire 2017 regular season due to a torn ACL and MCL suffered in Washington's first preseason game, was supposed to miss the first four games of last season due to a violation of the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Despite not playing last season, Murphy was second on his team in sacks with nine and forced three fumbles during the 2016 campaign with the Redskins as a reserve. The 27-year-old, who was selected by Washington in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Stanford University, has a huge amount of upside as he joins a Buffalo defense that is on the rise.

So far, Buffalo has done quite a bit on the defensive side of the ball with hopes of putting together an elite defense for the 2018 season. On Tuesday, the Bills also agreed to terms with former Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, although the exact amount of money on his five-year deal with the team is yet to be announced publicly.

This offseason, the Bills have also signed quarterback AJ McCarron, veteran cornerback Vontae Davis, safety Rafael Bush, outside linebacker Julian Stanford, and signed Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kyle Williams to a one-year, $6 million contract extension with the team.
