The New York Jets moved on from Zach Wilson this offseason after he disappointed in 2023 filling in for the injured Aaron Rodgers, but Sauce Gardner still has belief that the former No. 2 overall pick could be successful in a new environment with the Denver Broncos.

“When it comes to talent, as players and coaches, if you see somebody do something… Let me just speak for me if I see somebody do something one time then I know it's in them, I know they can do it,” Sauce Gardner said on the Green Light podcast with Chris Long.

“Right, so I did practice against him for two-straight years, and I've seen him do like some special things in games, so it's like I know he can do it. So it's just going to take something to get it out of him so this way this can become who he is like game in, game out every day at practice, you know what I'm saying.

“So I feel like a new chapter, like obviously I'm not familiar with Denver and how they run things, and who their coaches is but a new chapter I feel like was good for him and is good for him, and I feel like he has all the tools that it takes to be a top-tier NFL quarterback.”

The Jets drafted Zach Wilson with the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, as his play at BYU led the organization to believe that he had very high upside. Unfortunately, it did not work out, as Wilson struggled mightily at the NFL level for three years.

After Wilson's second season in the league, the Jets replaced him with Aaron Rodgers, who tore his Achilles on the first drive of the season, thrusting him back into the starting role and giving him one last chance. It did not work out, as Wilson struggled and the Jets failed to make the playoffs. Now, Wilson has moved on to the Broncos.

Zach Wilson's outlook with Broncos

The Broncos acquired Wilson in a trade with the Jets this offseason, which was one of the moves that Sean Payton made to revamp the quarterback room. Denver decided it was time to move on from Russell Wilson, despite his massive contract and the dead-cap hit.

Wilson will compete for the starting job for the 2024 season with Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham. It will be interesting to see where Wilson falls on the depth chart and if Sean Payton keeps three quarterbacks on the roster this season.

While Wilson conceivably could win the starting job with the Broncos, eventually, Denver will want to see what Bo Nix can do, as he was selected with the No. 12 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Still, it would be a good outcome for Wilson to find some stability in Denver and at least play himself into being a backup in the NFL.
