Just a few days after Tom Brady's shocking unretirement, Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians shockingly retired. The tinge of irony there is hard to ignore, but that's the NFL for you.

Arians' decision to hand over the keys to defensive coordinator Todd Bowles should be viewed as a selfless act, as he wants his successor to handle the Buccaneers with Brady still under center. That speaks a lot about Arians' imitable character.

The 69-year-old Arians, who steered the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl title in 2020, also made sure he let his players know about his surprising decision before the news broke out. He sent a group text to his wards to explain his move and express his genuine appreciation (via NFL Network's Mike Garafolo).

For sure, one text message isn't enough to fully convey how grateful Arians is during his three-year stint calling the shots for the Buccaneers. But this one was heartfelt, insightful, sweet, modest, charming, and funny all at the same time. His reminder that he'll still be around to cuss out Brady and company when they screw up was a fitting ending. No goodbyes, only expletives.

The two-time AP Coach of the Year will now move to the front office to guide the Buccaneers in making critical personnel decisions. As he has proven through the years, he's more than capable to take on any challenge—with the same stand-up character he's always imbibed.
