The Los Angeles Chargers actually considered signing former MVP Cam Newton.

During a recent interview with Zach Gelb of CBS Sports Radio, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn indicates that the franchise ended up passing on the opportunity.

“Absolutely, Cam is a tremendous quarterback,” said Lynn. “He's been MVP of this league, he's led his team to the Super Bowl and he's healthy now from what I hear. Cam is going to be on somebody's roster and he's going to help somebody win a few games, but yeah, we did take a look at that, sure.”

In fact, Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor and Cam Newton were seen in a workout video together prior to the NFL Draft. The social media video sparked speculation that Newton could be on his way to Los Angeles.

However, the team seems content with their quarterback situation moving forward. Taylor will be the starting quarterback while Los Angeles will go with No. 6 overall draft pick Justin Herbert as the backup for the 2020 season.

“I feel really good about the quarterback room that I have,” said Lynn. “With Tyrod Taylor, Easton Stick — those are guys that a lot of people don't talk about, but he was a Division I AA star– he won like three national championships. He's a hell of a leader, hell of a professional and I think he has a bright future in this league one day.”

Newton currently remains unsigned — a far fall for the 2015 NFL MVP.

With that being said, the 31-year-old is coming off of a major injury last season, suffering a Lisfranc fracture injury. The current coronavirus pandemic and team's lack of need at the quarterback position has likely led to Newton's decreased market value.

As the NFL season nears, Newton should generate more interest on the market. Which means he should find a new home with time.
