Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn hinted veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor has the inside track on the starting job under center.

Lynn noted he has history with Taylor, and also said the Chargers do not want to rush first-round pick Justin Herbert's development (via Lindsey Thiry of ESPN):

“I'm very familiar with Tyrod,” Lynn said. “But no position is final until we get to training camp right now.”

The No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft, Herbert faces an uphill challenge to win the starting job after an unusual virtual offseason program that prohibited the rookie — and his teammates — from taking the practice field.

“We drafted him high to one day be our franchise quarterback, for sure,” Lynn said. “But I don't want to put a timetable on this young man.”

Lynn coached Taylor while the two were in Buffalo, before they reunited with the Chargers. Taylor was named to the Pro Bowl in his first year as Bills starter in 2015, and he was a weapon both as a passer and a runner.

Taylor opened training camp as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns ahead of the 2018 season, but soon gave way to No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. He spent this past season as a backup to Philip Rivers with the Chargers.

Then again, Lynn said “no position is final.” Might this indicate the Chargers are in discussions with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick?

Lynn said last month Kaepernick would be a fit for the team's offensive system, also suggesting the Chargers were interested in signing Kap.

For now, however, the pecking order seems to be Taylor as the starter, with Herbert as the backup barring a phenomenal training camp for the Chargers.
