Updated: Austin Ekeler is expected to be sidelined 4-6 weeks, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler left Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a hamstring injury, and he might be sidelined for a while.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Ekeler sustained “what is considered a serious hamstring injury,” adding he is likely to be placed on Injured Reserve until official diagnosis is revealed.

Los Angeles had been using something of a committee look early in the year, with rookie Joshua Kelley also getting touches.

However, Ekeler's absence looms large, especially in the passing game.

The 25-year-old totaled 92 receptions and nearly 1,000 yards receiving in 2019. Ekeler's play was convincing enough to warrant a contract extension, with the Chargers also allowing Melvin Gordon to walk in free agency.

Ekeler had gotten off to a strong start in 2020, as well, rushing for close to 250 yards on 5.1 yards per carry while also racking up 17 receptions for 144 yards. He seemed to develop a particularly strong rapport with rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, who has been starting in place of the injured Tyrod Taylor.

Alas, it remains to be seen whether Ekeler will even be returning this season. Kelley will get more usage, and Justin Jackson should also emerge as a candidate to get more touches.

Nevertheless, Ekeler's loss is a big blow to Herbert and the rest of the Chargers' offense. Los Angeles has been competitive in every game Herbert has started, but it has still lost each of its last three.

Things could only get tougher without Ekeler in the backfield, considering he might be their most dangerous offensive weapon.
