Former NFL player and current TV analyst Bucky Brooks didn't hold back in his criticism of Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley over his decision to call a timeout late in OT against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Brooks called it a “coaching malpractice” on Staley's end, adding that there was no need to call a timeout after it appeared that the Raiders were ready to settle for a tie. The said result would have sent both teams to the Wild Card round, but things changed when the Chargers opted for a timeout with 38 seconds left.

“That’s coaching malpractice. The Raiders were squatting on the ball and content to run the clock out,” Brooks wrote on Twitter. “You take a timeout and give up a bit run the next play. That hero stuff is for the movies… Brandon Staley should catch some heat for being overly aggressive..”

For those not in the know, Brandon Staley called for a timeout with less than a minute remaining on the clock and the Raiders out of field goal range. Brooks explained the timeout didn't make sense since it is unlikely for Las Vegas to attempt a field goal at that point considering the risk of giving the Chargers a chance to block the field goal and turn things around.

After the timeout, Josh Jacobs gained 10 yards for the Raiders. At that point, interim head coach Rich Bisaccia opted to go for the win after considering to let the game end in a tie.

“There’s no need to try a long FG because they were guaranteed a playoff spot with a tie. There’s a bigger risk to kicking a 57-yarder because the odds increase of the kick being blocked due to a lower trajectory on a drive kick. Run, No 1st down, punt & tie..” Brooks added in response to arguments that the Chargers were trying to get a field goal all along and were not playing for the tie.

In the end, it is the biggest “What if” for the Chargers now that they will be home next week watching the Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers (who benefited in the results of the contest) playing in the Wild Card round.
