Lawyers representing Dea Spanos Berberian filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles Chargers owner Dean Spanos. She is officially accusing him of “misogynistic” behavior, “self-dealing” and repeated “breaches of fiduciary duty” in the suit. Berberian is looking to gain sole control of the Spanos family trust, which controls over one-third of the Chargers' ownership. According to ABC News, the lawsuit is also asking the judge to suspend and remove Dean Spanos as a co-trustee of the Chargers and unspecified damages to Berberian.

Alex Spanos bought the Chargers in 1984. In 2018, both Alex and Faye Spanos passed away. That created a ‘Succession' type conflict within the family. The four siblings, Dean, Michael, Dea and Alexandra, each own 15 percent of the Chargers. 36 percent is controlled by the family trust in question. The final four percent are owned by non-family entities.

Here are more details on the lawsuit:

Berberian claims that her brothers, Dean and Michael, acted “out of their deeply-held misogynistic attitudes and sense of entitlement as the men in the family … and to rationalize their pitiable behavior which she believes is intended to teach her that a woman has no rights… (Dean and Michael) believe to their cores that, regardless of what their parents intended and their wills specified, men are in charge and women should shut up.”

Berberian claims that the franchise is all but insolvent. The suit states that the move from San Diego to Los Angeles has led to financial disaster. It is forcing the family to sell the team to pay off the $358 million in debt incurred.

The alleged “breaches of fiduciary duty” include Dean diverting $105 million from the trust to pay off debts and manipulating the trust to borrow over $60 million to buy an airplane. This situation is getting very messy and is not likely to get any better.
