The Los Angeles Chargers are testing Melvin Gordon. We'll find out soon if the veteran running back lives up to his word of continuing to hold out from his longtime team unless his contract situation is addressed.

According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the Chargers' have “dug in” on refusing to offer Gordon an extension, effectively daring him to stay away from the team as training camp gets underway and honor his prior threat of demanding a trade.

Gordon reported to minicamp in June as he and his representatives engaged in early extension negotiations with Los Angeles management. Those talks quickly stalled, leading him to publicly threaten a holdout and potential trade demand if the Chargers refused to offer him a market-value extension.

“I want to end up with the Chargers. That's my home,” Gordon said on July 13, per Bleacher Report's Adam Wells. “I'm not going to sit here and be like, ‘Man, I don't want to go back to the Chargers, dah, dah, dah.' Like that's the team that blessed me with an opportunity. They started my life. They changed my life. Of all 32 teams, that was the team that called me. I can't forget them for that.

“But it's an opportunity right now where I know I need to take advantage of it. You know, I want to get paid. That's just kind of what it is. Hopefully I end up a Charger. That's the goal. I want to end up with the Chargers.”

Melvin Gordon, a two-time Pro Bowler, averaged a career-best 5.1 yards per carry last season en route to 885 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, also adding 50 catches for 490 yards and four scores, despite being limited to 12 games due to injury.
