The Los Angeles Chargers were able to secure their future, franchise quarterback by taking Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. There is now plenty of speculation regarding when they will decide to let him take over under center.

The Chargers made it clear they were ready for a change after parting ways with quarterback Philip Rivers this offseason. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, they reportedly plan on taking their time with Herbert's development (h/t Evan Silva of EstablishTheRun.com):

“Justin Herbert needs time to grow,” said Schefter. “They’re not going to rush him in there.”

It is no secret that the Chargers have struggled to make their presence felt since the relocation prior to the 2017 campaign. They are now set to officially usher in a new era at SoFi Stadium in the 2020 NFL season and nothing would gain the attention of the fans like showing off their new quarterback.

Regardless, it appears Los Angeles is not going to let that get in the way of taking a patient approach with Herbert's progression. It is certainly understandable considering they have made quite the investment to have him one day turn the fortunes of the franchise around.

Fortunately, the Chargers have taken steps to ensure that they can remain competitive while Herbert emerges into a bonafide starter. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor now finds himself in familiar territory serving as the bridge for an other top pick after filling the same role for the Cleveland Browns prior to his arrival. It seems Taylor will have another opportunity to prove himself as a legitimate No. 1 option in his own right.
