Following the last two seasons that have been plagued by injuries, Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett has been on pace to play a major role in the 2018 season.

However, it appears that he will not have that opportunity due to suffering what may have been a torn Achilles tendon during a run on the first conditioning test of training camp, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

This is a potentially huge blow to the Chargers' secondary with one of their primary pieces to the puzzle out of the mix as he was on pace to be the starter alongside Pro Bowler Casey Hayward in what the team hoped would be one of the top cornerback duos in the league. It now puts Verrett on the sidelines once again for the third straight year.

He had missed 12 games in the 2016 campaign due to a partially torn ACL that forced him to miss 12 games that year. Verrett once again saw these same issues flare up at the start of last year as he missed all but one game due to having to undergo surgery to correct the injury.

This is yet another setback for him that could likely mark the end of his time with the Chargers due to his inability to stay on the field as he's currently in the fifth-year option worth $8.5 million for the 2018 season.

There was a tremendous level of confidence that Verrett was fully healthy to make his return to the field this upcoming campaign, which all came to crashing halt on the first day of training camp in a conditioning test.

This could push the team to look to address the situation externally by adding veteran help in free agency or lean Trevor Williams or Desmond King to step into a more prominent role in the secondary.
