One team's trash is a different team's treasure. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Los Angeles Chargers have signed quarterback Chase Daniel on a one-year deal.

Additionally, Daniel will still get $1.5 million in guaranteed money from his prior contract with the Detroit Lions. Los Angeles expects the 34-year old to serve as a mentor for promising stud Justin Herbert.

The Lions released Daniel over a week ago after spending one season in Detroit as Matthew Stafford's back-up quarterback. Now, both of them are in Los Angeles, with Stafford being traded to the Rams over a week ago.

The Chargers were also in need of a back up after Tyrod Taylor signed with the Houston Texans in the offseason. Daniel has played in just four games each over the last three seasons. The Chargers don't see him playing a ton of games, but rather envision Daniel to carry the same reserve quarterback role he has had for nearly his entire career. This time, it will be under the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

In addition to serving as Herbert's mentor, this will also be a reunion stop for Daniel. He played under Chargers Offensive Coordinator Joe Lombardi when the 52-year old served as head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Daniel had two separate stints with the Saints, the first from 2009 to 2012 and the second in 2017.

Furthermore, Brandon Staley, who is getting his NFL head coaching debut with the Chargers, served as an assistant for the Chicago Bears when Daniel played there from 2018 to 2019.
