Based on how things unfolded between the Los Angeles Chargers and Melvin Gordon this past season, you would think Gordon departing the Chargers was a foregone conclusion.
But not so fast.
During an appearance on PFT Live, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said that the team would like to have Gordon back and that he thinks there is a chance the running-back re-signs in Los Angeles:
“I do believe that,” Lynn said when asked if he thought Gordon could return. “We love Melvin. He’s outstanding. He held out last year, that hurt us a little bit, but when he came back his attitude and the way he fit right back into the locker room was typical Melvin. We’d like to have him back, but it’s free agency and you never know what’s going to happen.”
Gordon also said last month that he hoped to remain with LA.
Article Continues BelowOf course, what the Bolts and Gordon would like to happen and what actually occurs are two different things.
Clearly, the two sides differ rather significantly on Gordon's value, as Gordon wants to be paid like an elite halfback, and the Chargers do not feel he is worth that kind of dough.
The gap resulted in Gordon holding out early on in the 2019 campaign. He eventually returned and played 12 games, but his production was only so-so, as he totaled 612 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 3.8 yards per carry. He added 42 catches for 296 yards and a score.
Gordon, who entered the NFL as a first-round pick of the Chargers back in 2015, has made a couple of Pro Bowls.
