The Los Angeles Chargers have a lot on their plate, including taking care of Melvin Gordon. The team is coming off their most successful season in many years and has several players in need of extensions. One of those players is quarterback Philip Rivers, although Rivers has said he doesn't care if his contract is extended before it expires.

Gordon isn't quite as comfortable taking things year to year. Speaking to the media recently, the Wisconsin product made it clear he'd like to have a new pact sooner rather than later, per Gilbert Manzano of the OC Register.

“I don’t have time for none of that. Going back and forth. I rather just get it (the extension) done and get it out the way. Like I said, we will revisit that,” Gordon said.

Considering running backs have much shorter careers than quarterbacks do, and that Gordon hasn't made nearly as much money in his short career, it makes sense why he's anxious to get something done. Gordon is set to play 2019 under the fifth-year option in his deal, the final season of his rookie contract.

The Chargers originally drafted Gordon in the first round back in 2015, and he's blossomed into one of the league's best backs since then. They've used him as a real workhorse in recent years, so it's understandable why he wants to be compensated promptly. Last year Gordon averaged 5.1 yards per carry, while also racking up 50 receptions for 490 additional yards through the air.

Contract disputes between front offices and star players can cast an ugly cloud over teams, and Gordon wants to avoid that. That's admirable, and hopefully, Chargers general manager Tom Telesco can get something worked out with Gordon's agent shortly.
