With Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram in tow, the Los Angeles Chargers already had a strong defensive line, but during the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft last Thursday, they added another big piece, taking Notre Dame defensive lineman Jerry Tillery with the 28th overall pick.

Pro Football Focus seems to think that Tillery was a steal at that spot, as it had him ranked as a top 10 prospect going into the draft.

Tillery is coming off of a terrific senior campaign in which he racked up 29 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and three forced fumbles.

The 22-year-old arrived at Notre Dame back in 2015 and played only scarcely during his freshman year, finishing with 12 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack.

Then, the following season, Tillery's role grew significantly, although he didn't make much of a dent in Notre Dame's pass rush, as he totaled 37 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss.

He had a much more impressive junior campaign, registering 56 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.

The Chargers had one of the best defenses in the NFL this past season, ranking ninth in total defense and eighth in points allowed. However, they had some difficulty getting to the quarterback, as they finished just 19th in the league with 30 sacks.

Obviously, Los Angeles is hoping that Tillery can help better its pass rush.

The Bolts won 12 games in 2018 and earned a Wild Card berth in the AFC. They then went on to defeat the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs before falling to the New England Patriots in the Divisional Round.
