The Los Angeles Chargers signed Thomas Davis this offseason to strengthen their linebacker position. In his first season with Los Angeles, Davis has lofty expectations for the defense.

David spoke to Daniel Popper, team beat writer for The Athletic, and said he is targeting being the number one defense in the NFL. After all, Los Angeles does have plenty of talent to make it possible.

Last season, Los Angeles was the ninth-ranked defense in the NFL. Although, the Chargers didn't have a fully healthy Joey Bosa during the regular season. Despite that, they were able to finish with a record of 12-4 in 2018.

Everywhere you look on the Chargers defense it's hard to find a weakness for them. First, the Chargers have one of the best pass-rushing duos in Bosa and Melvin Ingram.

Then, in the interior, Brandon Mebane and newly drafted Jerry Tillery are both capable of stuffing the run. Plus, the linebacking corp adds David to Denzel Perryman and Jatavis Brown. Davis' veteran leadership will prove to be very beneficial to the Chargers locker room.

Besides the edge-rushers, the best part of the Chargers defense may be their secondary. Derwin James is becoming one of the elite safeties in the NFL with Casey Hayward quietly being a shut-down cornerback in Los Angeles.

You put all of that together, and the Chargers may have one of the best defenses in the NFL in 2019. As for Davis, he has his eyes set on being the best defense—not just one of the best.
