By all accounts, the Kansas City Chiefs have had a fantastic offseason. Even though the Chiefs lost All-Pro cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, they were at least able to retrieve a third-round pick in 2025 via trade. Other than him, Kansas City didn't lose much else. The team then added Hollywood Brown in free agency and drafted Xavier Worthy.
Kansas City is loaded yet again, but they still have moves they can make. The Chiefs can target Caleb Farley and Khalil Herbert in trades to help fortify their roster even further in 2024.
Chiefs nab Caleb Farley from Titans
Caleb Farley was drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft due to his potential. However, he was a re-injury risk due to his prior injury history.
Still, Farley was able to pass medical re-checks weeks before the draft and that gave the Tennessee Titans give the green light to take him in the first round. Unfortunately for them, the Titans haven't gotten great return on that investment as injuries have continued to plague Farley in the pros. He tore his ACL in just his third game as a rookie, which wiped out parts of two seasons.
Then his back started to flare up again. A nerve issue caused him to miss the entire 2023 season as well. Farley has only been able to play in 12 games across three seasons. That has put his role on the team in jeopardy.
Tennessee was the team that was lucky enough to acquire Sneed from the Chiefs. They also signed Chidobe Awuzie in free agency from the Cincinnati Bengals and have Roger McCreary and Tre Avery as depth pieces. Farley may need to play on special teams just to be active on game days.
With a new general manager and coaching staff in Nashville now compared to when he was drafted, a change of scenery looks to be what is best for Farley right now. The Chiefs can provide that and give him a solid role. After Sneed left, they are short on corners outside of All-Pro Trent McDuffie.
The Chiefs and Titans made one trade involving a cornerback this offseason. Perhaps they can make another and help get Farley's career back on track.
Chiefs acquire Khalil Herbert from Bears
Running back is not a major need for Kansas City. Isiah Pacheco has established himself as one of the better and more efficient runners in the league. He's fit like a glove within the Chiefs' offense to help them generate explosive plays. But their depth after him is a bit of a mess.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire will never live up to his first-round status, but he is a fine change-of-pace back. Jerick McKinnon is a better third-down specialist and could return to the team, but he's currently a free agent. After those two are the likes of young, unproven commodities like Keaontay Ingram, Deneric Prince, Hassan Hall and rugby convert Louis Rees-Zammit.
That's why the Chiefs should take a look at Chicago's Khalil Herbert. Herbert is not the explosive big play runner that Pacheco is. He also is not much of a receiving threat. But he is an absolutely fantastic runner. Herbert has always been at the top of the league in metrics like yards after contact and broken tackle rate and that was true again last season.
Herbert ranked 21st in the NFL among running backs last season in juke rate (20.4%), via playerprofiler.com. He was also 19th in yards per touch (4.9) and breakaway run rate (5.3%). Next Gen Stats also ranked Herbert 18th in the league in rushing yards over expectation per attempt (+0.29).
Herbert is a good player who can keep Pacheco fresh or fill in for him if he ever misses time. He certainly has more juice on the ground than Edwards-Helaire or McKinnon do. With a logjam in Chicago's backfield, he could be available for a late-round pick or swap. Kansas City could and should afford that to bolster their depth at the running back spot.
