Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes did not exactly get off to a great start in the Super Bowl, but as the old adage says, it's not how you start, it's how you finish.

After throwing a couple of critical interceptions in the second half, Mahomes took over during the final frame, leading the Chiefs back from a 10-point deficit by leading three straight touchdown drives for a 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Mahomes ended up completing 26 of his 42 throws for 286 yards, a pair of touchdowns and those two picks, ultimately winning Super Bowl MVP honors.

After the game, head coach Andy Reid said he never had any doubt that Mahomes could break out of his slump:

“I never think that,” Reid told Peter King for Football Morning in America after the Chiefs' win. “I always think with him, keep firing. I’ve seen this before. Right when you don’t think he’s gonna do something, he rips your heart out with great plays. You saw that with Larry Bird. Larry Bird might’ve gone cold for a little bit but he kept shooting. That’s what you do with the great ones. This kid’s young, but he’s great. He’s gonna do nothing but get better.”

Mahomes, who played his collegiate football at Texas Tech, was originally selected by the Chiefs with the 10th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He spent his rookie campaign learning behind Alex Smith, but that ensuing offseason, Kansas City traded Smith to the Washington Redskins, opening the door for Mahomes to start.

The 24-year-old responded by throwing 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns with the Chiefs in 2018, earning a league MVP award.

Now, Mahomes is a Super Bowl champion.
