The Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif was the first player to opt out of the 2020 NFL season last week, and the defending Super Bowl champions will also be without their starting running back Damien Williams.

Williams informed the team of his intention to sit out, per Chiefs general manager Brett Veach.

Damien Williams might not have been the game-breaker the Chiefs hoped he might be in 2019, but he still ran for 498 yards and five touchdowns on 4.5 yards per carry, also grabbing 30 receptions for 213 yards.

The 28-year-old was limited to just 11 games due to injury. But he was present and productive when it mattered most.

Williams scored three total touchdowns in Kansas City's victory over the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional round. He then added another score against the Tennessee Titans, also racking up five receptions for 44 yards.

But Williams was just saving his best for last. He rushed 17 times for 104 yards against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl, including the 38-yard scamper that sealed the game for the Chiefs last n the fourth quarter. Damien Williams also had a receiving touchdown on the evening.

Kansas City might scramble to sign a veteran running back. Perhaps it will reengage LeSean McCoy after “Shady” had a decent run with the team last season.

In the meantime, Williams' decision would seem to put added pressure on rookie back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The former LSU product is seen by many as a perfect fit for the Chiefs' offensive system, but he might immediately enter the 2020 season as the feature back with Williams opting out.
