The Kansas City Chiefs came up short versus the New England Patriots in the AFC Conference Championship Game. As a result, head coach Andy Reid has officially shifted gears toward the offseason.

There has already been plenty of speculation regarding where Kansas City intends to improve in the summer. According to NFL Network's James Palmer, Reid indicated that their focus may lean toward the defensive side of the ball.

Andy Reid is evaluating everything right now, players and coaches. Asked directly today if Bob Sutton will be back next season, Reid declined to comment. Simply said he never talks about that stuff during these pressers, but is going back and looking at everything.

Reid's decision to decline to comment on the future of defensive coordinator Bob Sutton is not the most encouraging sign. It is no secret that the defense was largely considered to be the Chiefs' weakness going into the playoffs. Their struggles were magnified by the fact that they had the most prolific offense in the NFL.

The defense did a marvelous job of shutting down the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Divisional Round. Unfortunately, they were unable to follow up their strong performance after allowing the Patriots to convert 13 of 19 third downs while dominating the time of possession (43:59) to 20:53). IT became evident that some changes need to be made this offseason.

Fortunately, Kansas City already has some promising pieces to build upon on the defensive side of the ball. The Chiefs have established a strong edge rush with Justin Houston and Dee Ford. They could use their $35 million in cap space to help fortify the secondary and potentially beef up the run game inside.
