Throughout much of the 2018 campaign, Kansas City Chiefs second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes has taken the league by storm with a break0ut year.
This has largely led to him being considered the frontrunner to earn the MVP award behind his stellar play on the field. Ahead of the Week 17 matchup against Mahomes, Oakland Raiders head coach Patrick Mahomes has voiced that he believes that the 23-year-old should be in line to earn the honor, via Kirk Larrabee of 247 Sports.
“I haven’t seen everybody,” Gruden said Wednesday. “I don’t know how you can’t be the MVP after you look at his body of work as a first-year starter. Not to take anything away from Brees or anybody else who’s played at a high level, but this guy’s making throws that people haven’t seen before. Closing in on 50 touchdown passes in your first year as a starter, that’s quite amazing. And he’s taking care of the ball and has won games for his team. So, if I did have a vote, I would probably stand here in front of these microphones and say I’d vote for him.”
Mahomes has put together quite an impressive campaign in his first year as the starting quarterback while leading the Chiefs to the best record in the AFC. What has only added to this strong surge is that he has been at the top of the league in production as leads the NFL with 48 touchdown passes, second with 4,816 passing yards and a 114.0 passer rating.
This alone has made it quite difficult for any other player to make a more appealing case that Mahomes. He has been highly productive along with pushing his team to a tremendous amount of success in the process.
Mahomes has the chance to wrap up his breakout campaign in Week 17 against the Raiders that could all but secure him as the clear-cut frontrunner for the MVP award. He currently has favorable odds to win the regular-season award, according to BetOnline.ag.
