Patrick Mahomes has another piece to work with. The Kansas City Chiefs have officially signed free agent running back Jerrick McKninnon.

Kansas City has had a busy offseason when it comes to building an offense around Patrick Mahomes and it seems the Chiefs are not done yet. They have built up the offensive line with a move for Orlando Brown and other signings for offensive lineman.

McKinnon is not an incredible running back by any means, but he does provide some much needed depth. He has some versatility in the passing game and was a very consistent 500 yard a year running back before last season. He was pretty disappointing in his time with the San Francisco 49ers last season, but he will look to make a comeback with the Chiefs, the two-time defending AFC champs, this upcoming season.

McKinnon began his career in Minnesota and developed solidly behind Dalvin Cook. He was a solid change of pace back and was expected to breakout in San Francisco. He failed to live up to any hype in the bay and that is the main reason he has not been signed until now. He still has utility with the Chiefs, though, due to his speed and versatility.

The Chiefs are looking to return to the Super Bowl, and hopefully, turn it into a championship this year. McKinnon's part in that will be as a platoon back. He is likely to play a lot on third downs due to his ability to catch passes.

Patrick Mahomes doesn't get top billing for his utilization of running backs in the passing game, if only because he has such a good rapport with his wide receivers and tight end Travis Kelce, but he still rates as a resourceful quarterback who can make checkdowns when he needs to and involve running backs in a short passing game. McKinnon could develop that weapon for the Chiefs.
