The Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes have begun contract negotiations, according to Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star.

This is the smart move, especially for the Chiefs because Mahomes' price tag is only likely to get more expensive by waiting. According to Mellinger, it's unclear how far along the contract negotiations are at this point, but they are indeed underway. One thing we do know is that once pen hits paper, Mahomes is going to be the highest-paid player, let alone quarterback, in NFL history.

The big question is just how much money Mahomes will ultimately get per year. His yearly average could be as high as $40 million per year, if not more. With the salary cap rising every season it might make sense to give Mahomes a contract that pays him a certain percentage of the Chiefs' cap.

That would give Mahomes a contract that goes up in value each year. But it would also give the team a more flexibility because they know exactly what percent of their salary cap spending will be earmarked for him.

Whatever Mahomes and the Chiefs agree upon, he should likely be worth every penny, especially if he can continue to lead the Chiefs to Super Bowl victories.
