Not that this should come as much of a surprise based on the season he just had, but Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has won the Best NFL Player award at the 2019 ESPYs.

Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 66 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 113.8 en route to a Pro Bowl appearance, a First-Team All-Pro selection and NFL MVP honors.

The 23-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Texas Tech, was originally selected by the Chiefs with the 10th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

However, due to the fact that Alex Smith was still under center for Kansas City at the time, Mahomes served as a backup during his rookie campaign, making one start and throwing for 284 yards and an interception in that appearance.

The Chiefs then proceeded to trade Smith that ensuing offseason, clearing the way for Mahomes to take the reins as the starter.

Mahomes led Kansas City to 12 wins and an AFC West division title in 2018, locking down the No. 1 seed in the conference in the process. He then went on to lead the Chiefs to a Divisional Round playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts before falling to the New England Patriots in an overtime thriller in the AFC Championship Game the following week.

With one full season under his belt, Mahomes obviously has bigger aspirations for 2019, and his most significant goal doesn't have anything to do with his numbers or individual accolades, as Mahomes is hoping to get the Chiefs over the hump en route to a Super Bowl title this coming season.
