Kansas City Chiefs Tyrann Mathieu is a trendy guy and he hopes that he can use his platform to make voting cool in the United States. Mathieu has been outspoken the last couple of weeks about different injustices in the United States after the death of George Floyd while in police custody.

Mathieu said in a conference call that he knows what type of role protests play in getting change, but it can't stop there. Voting gives people a chance to shape the community they live in, which is why he and Chiefs Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes are leading a voter registration effort.

Per Chiefs.com, via ProFootballTalk:

“We can sit here all day and talk about a lot of different things, right? Most of those topics are very sensitive, they’re very tough conversations,” Mathieu said on a conference call. “I think voter registration isn’t one of those conversations. I think it impacts everybody. I think everybody can be a part of that. And like I mentioned, if guys like myself and more guys like me, if we can make voting cool, if we can make that a trendy thing, we’re really changing the future. . . . One of the most important things is to vote, but a lot of folks don’t think that’s cool. Maybe we can make that a cool thing again.”

Voting numbers are down, especially with young people, so hopefully stars like Chiefs safety Mathieu being so outspoken will help get more people out to vote. Having a voice in who leads local, state, and the federal government is an important right as American citizens.
