The 2023 college football season is just about to be all wrapped up. The Army-Navy game is all that stands in the regular season. Soon after, bowl games and the College Football Playoff will come through the pike, but until those kick off, the attention regarding college football is going to shift to the transfer portal. And rightfully so: a ton of big names have already submitted their name into the portal looking for either a change of scenery, a step up in competition, more playing time, or just playing closer to home. Notre Dame's Chris Tyree isn't the biggest name out there, but he is among the best wide receivers to have entered the portal so far.

Wide receiver doesn't exactly do Chris Tyree justice. He can play wide receiver and do it well, but he's also a jack-of-all-trades type of player. Tyree has been deployed in all kinds of roles during his four seasons at Notre Dame and has played those roles well. He has scored a touchdown as a receiver, a rusher, a punt returner, and a kick returner. When he gets the ball in his hands, he is electric.

Tyree is clearly an incredible talent, but he has never put together a season with more than 582 yards of offense in South Bend. Perhaps a change of scenery could unlock Tyree's game-breaking talent. The question then becomes: where is the place that can unlock Chris Tyree's talent?

Virginia Cavaliers

The Virginia Cavaliers are rumored to be in the running to snag Tyree out of the portal. The fit makes sense for a multitude of reasons. For one, Tyree is a Virginia native; he is from Chester, Virginia, which is not even 1.5 hours away from Charlottesville, Virginia where the University of Virginia's campus is located. Playing closer to home should appeal to anybody.

But it also makes sense since the Cavaliers need more weapons on offense. The Cavs did have two wide receivers break out for them this season. Malik Washington really stood out with the 1,426 yards and nine touchdowns along with the 110 receptions he brought in this season. Malachi Fields should not be overlooked either. He racked up 811 yards and five touchdowns on 58 receptions in 2023.

But the Cavaliers really relied on those two. Their leading rusher was Perris Jones with only 393 rushing yards. Their third leading receiver was running back Kobe Pace, who ran for 382 yards and caught for 176 yards. Tyree's versatility as a runner and receiver could really shine in Virginia. Tyree's 484 receiving yards were a career high and he has two seasons with at least 444 yards rushing. Virginia's offense could be very dynamic if they are able to add Tyree to the fold. This seems like a very good fit.

Alabama Crimson Tide

When Chris Tyree was being recruited out of high school as a top-30 recruit, he had his pick of the litter among interested schools. One of those schools was Alabama, and they make even more sense now than they did when Tyree was first being recruited. The main reason why? Their offensive coordinator.

Tommy Rees was Notre Dame's offensive coordinator when the Irish recruited Tyree out of high school. Tyree's most prolific season of his college career came in 2020 when Rees was the Irish coordinator. Rees is familiar with Tyree's game and would know how to maximize his skillset.

Alabama could use some more dynamic players in their offense too. Jermaine Burton was their leading receiver with 777 yards in 2023. He's also a senior and could leave for the NFL. Jase McClellan, Alabama's leading rusher, is also a senior who could leave. The familiarity with Tommy Rees and Bama's need for extra dynamic offensive pieces could make for a nice fit between them and Tyree.
