This game used to be a hugely important game in the Big East Conference, before it dissolved in football and was reshaped for basketball. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh met for the Big East championship when Brian Kelly was coaching the Bearcats. This preceded Kelly's move to Notre Dame, where he coached for over a decade and was very successful.

This year, Cincinnati is in the Big 12 Conference, whereas last year, it was part of the AAC. It's not as though Pittsburgh has any film on Cincinnati games against Big 12 opponents, since the Bearcats haven't played a Big 12 Conference game yet this season.

One of the intriguing subplots to this game is the fact that Cincinnati's coach is familiar with Pittsburgh. Scott Satterfield coached Louisville in the ACC but made a surprising move to join the Bearcats. This is what enabled Jeff Brohm to move from Purdue to Louisville, his hometown and his alma mater, to coach the Cardinals for the 2023 season.

Satterfield versus Pat Narduzzi will be a very interesting chess match to watch.

Why Cincinnati Could Cover the Spread

Scott Satterfield has studied Pittsburgh film in the past as part of an ACC team (Louisville) game-planning for ACC opponents. This will enable Cincinnati to find the right X-and-O approach to Pitt. The Panthers won the ACC championship in 2021 but were nowhere close to that lofty standard in 2022. Pittsburgh had something really special that year with Kenny Pickett at quarterback and Jordan Addison at receiver. The Panthers have not been able to find adquate replacements for those two college stars. Pittsburgh had USC transfer Kedon Slovis at quarterback last year. That did not work out well. The Panthers are sorting through quarterbacks and don't seem to know what they have or what they are capable of. It is hard to trust Pittsburgh's offense. Accordingly, it is hard to trust Pitt as a team.

Why Pitt Could Cover the Spread

Scott Satterfield might be familiar with the ACC, but on the other hand, he is a clear downgrade for Cincinnati at head coach. The man he is replacing is Luke Fickell, who guided the Bearcats to the College Football Playoff in the 2021 season. Satterfield, who has had success at Appalachian State before moving to Louisville, is a moderately good coach. He isn't a bad coach. However, Fickell is an excellent coach, so this is definitely a downgrade for the Bearcats heading into a clash with an upper-tier ACC program. That will probably matter at some point in this game. Pitt should be able to score against Cincinnati's defense with Fickell — a defensive mastermind — not there to help the Bearcats scheme up for this game.

Final Cincinnati-Pitt Prediction & Pick

The Satterfield replacement of Fickell definitely hurts Cincinnati. The Bearcats probably aren't in the best possible position to win this game. With the spread being only one touchdown, Pitt stands a good chance of being able to win by at least 10 points. Take Pitt.

Final Cincinnati-Pitt Prediction & Pick: Pitt -7
