LOS ANGELES – On Thursday night, the L.A. Clippers welcome back their longest-tenured player in franchise history, DeAndre Jordan. Jordan, who is now with the Dallas Mavericks, spent 10 seasons with the Clippers from 2008 to 2018.

Before his final three seasons with the Clippers were locked into a contract, however, one of the most intriguing fiascos in the history of free agency happened in early July of 2015. Jordan, who had verbally committed to the Mavs and thus, also agreed to leave the L.A., had a change of heart towards the end of the moratorium period and decided he wanted to re-sign with the Clippers.

NBA Twitter lost it's mind as Clippers players tweeted out emojis signifying their statuses, reports surfaced that Mavs owner Marc Cuban was driving around Houston looking for Jordan's home, and Clippers players locked Jordan in his own home, keeping him away from his phone and social media until he signed his new deal at midnight.

Before taking on Jordan and the Mavs for the first time at Staples Center on Thursday night, I asked Clippers head coach Doc Rivers about that eventful night to get his perspective on what he remembered best.

“We had a good meal, food was great,” said Rivers as he recalled the night of July 8, 2015. “D.J. went out and got fried chicken. It was funny watching Steve Ballmer eating fried chicken and collard greens, that was interesting. No, it was a weird day, but I think it was far weirder on the outside of the room than on the inside of the room. People on the inside of the room, there was not a lot of stuff going on. I mean, basically, D.J. basically told us he was staying within five seconds.”

Jordan told the Clippers he was staying within five seconds, and yet every single player and coach who arrived at his home for the all-important meeting didn't leave.

“Paul Pierce came up with the grand idea of, ‘Ok, we don’t believe you and we’re just going to stay until it’s time to sign.' I actually thought we were going to leave right away and it was smart by Paul because D.J. had always proven he could change his mind,” said Rivers with a laugh. “It was a fun day. We actually watched the Summer League games on TV, we ran out of things to watch. We ate two or three different times, but other than that…”

And yes, literally every single player stayed there until the signing was official and Jordan continued his tenure with the Clippers.

“Yeah, no one left,” added Rivers.

While the Clippers were at Jordan's home having a regular get-together, the NBA Twitter-verse was losing its mind at the thought of Clippers players trapping Jordan inside of his own home and waiting until he re-signed. The players tweeting emojis and even a chair blocking off the front door didn't help, either.

Rivers says he had no idea about any of the stuff that was going on on Twitter until the following day, when he got back home and saw all the uproar on social media.

“I was oblivious to the social media scene at that point,” admitted Rivers. “I’m not very up to it. I didn’t know all that was going on until the next day when I got home and I saw. I didn’t know Blake [Griffin] had did all the [social media stuff] – I didn’t know any of that was going on at the time. It was pretty funny.”

If you forgot most of the craziness that happened that night, here's a reminder of what happened as soon as word got out that Jordan was having second thoughts about leaving the Clippers, causing mass chaos on Twitter.

Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, J.J. Redick, and Paul Pierce all tweeted out emojis saying they were headed over to Jordan's house. Paul even left his banana boat vacation with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony for the all-important recruitment meeting.

Even Austin Rivers and assistant coach Mike Woodsoon joined in on the fun, although we're not sure they completely understood the game.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim MacMahon tweeted out that the Clippers essentially were in all four corners of Jordan's home awaiting the end of the moratorium period at midnight.

While this wasn't exactly the situation, Griffin was obviously keeping up with reports on Twitter and decided to have a little fun by pinning the front door with a dining room chair.

A few hours later, Pierce let all of Clippers Nation rest easy with these photo of Jordan officially signing his new, four-year deal with L.A.

Once the Clippers had Jordan re-signed, Griffin let everyone know it was time to say good night.
