No one wants to suffer an injury, especially one that costs you over a year of football but Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck said the injury was actually a blessing in disguise.

Luck told Albert Breer of SI.com that the injury allowed him to re-evaluate what he put the emphasis in on his life and he actually thinks it saved the marriage with his wife Nicole.

“I’d put way too much of my self-worth directly into how I was performing on the football field,” Luck said. “And then I wasn’t on the football field and I felt quite empty. It was very unhealthy, first for me, second for the relationship with my now-wife, and my other relationships. The result has been the best thing that ever could’ve happened. It forced me to look in the mirror and do a character assessment, and address the things I didn’t like and then the things I did like, and then get on the same page with the people I love and respect.”

Luck also said the time away helped him be more present with the team and focus more on practice, film, or team activities. Luck thinks that really helped him improve his play last season and that helped lead the team to the playoffs last year.

This year Luck is dealing with a calf injury but is expected to be ready for the regular season and that means the expectations are high again, and anything except a deep playoff run would be considered a disappointment.
