The timeline for Carson Wentz to return for the Indianapolis Colts after undergoing foot surgery remains somewhat foggy with the regular season opener less than a month away.

There remains optimism that Wentz could be ready for the Colts' Week 1 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.

According to the Indianapolis Star, head coach Frank Reich is plenty confident in either Jacob Eason or Sam Ehlinger, should Wentz miss part of the regular season. Reich specifically referenced both quarterbacks performances for Indianapolis in their preseason opener.

“I thought he went out there and showed himself well,” Reich said of Eason. “There are times where (his timing) needs to be better, I think you’re seeing that right at times, but I think he’s making good progress. He’s very coachable, and I think he’s getting better each day and each week. Shoot, I’d [say the] same thing about our other quarterback (Ehlinger). He had times where he was a little slow on the trigger, so he needs to speed that up, but there were also a lot of good flashes as well. Real good decision making, real good timing and then made good throws.”

It may not be a completely reassuring plan for the Colts as Eason has never taken an NFL snap and Ehlinger is just a rookie who hasn't either, but Indianapolis hasn't given any indication that Wentz is expected to miss a ton of time, if any of the regular season.

The Colts feel confident enough with what they have and after both Eason and Ehlinger showed flashes in the first preseason game, it's hard to go against this avenue that Reich and Indianapolis is taking for now.
