Earlier this month, there were reports that indicated that the Indianapolis Colts were pursuing an extension with Marlon Mack. On the contrary, Jim Irsay denies that Indianapolis is pursuing a contract extension with Mack.

“Marlon Mack, we love him. . . . We want him back, and he wants to be back, really,” Irsay said, via the Indianapolis Star. “There were some misreports that we were pursuing an extension there. That’s not the case.”

The initial report that the Colts want to sign Mack to an extension was actually summoned from comments that Chris Ballard made. Ballard, the Colts GM, made it clear that Indianapolis would like to keep Mack beyond his current contract.

Even though Irsay basically shared the same sentiment, it's unclear why he's attempting to walk back the statement made by Ballard. This season, Mack produced the best season of his career despite fracturing his hand.

The former fourth-round pick rushed for a career-high 1,091 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019. Next season, Mack is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is a cap hit of only $2.2 million.

With the short shelf life for running backs, Mack realizes that he has to get his money when he can. Given that, the South Florida product is likely going to garner a decent contract in the future.

While it would be wise to get an extension sooner rather than later, the Colts are content with waiting to get a deal done with Mack. For Mack, Irsay's latest comments are a bit concerning as he heads into the final year of his current contract.
