There have been a few hot button issues in the NFL that have been around for a long time. Two of those are concussions and racial inequality.

And now, according to the Associated Press, four members of Congress are calling out the league on their concussion payments and “denying black players.”

“If these allegations are true,” the letter said, referring to a lawsuit filed last month against the NFL, “the algorithm used to modify the results of your cognitive evaluations appear to have the effect of denying Black players — a historically disadvantaged and legally protected group — compensation to which they would otherwise be entitled. This would raise serious questions about the NFL’s commitment to racial justice and compliance with the Federal law that mandates equal protection.”

The four Congress members in question are Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Representatives. Yvette D. Clarke (D-N.Y.) and Maxine Waters (D-Calif.).

And they seem to have some very serious questions about how the NFL handles concussion payments. More importantly, how they handle them with black players.

According to the allegations, the algorithm the NFL uses to modify the results of their cognitive evaluations appear to have the effect of denying black players. That means they are making it harder for the black players to get what is owed to them.

There have already been enough issues with how black players have been treated throughout history. So piling this on would be a very bad look for the NFL.

It would also make a lot of what they are doing right now seem like hollow gestures. With everything happening, every sports league, team and player seems to be stepping up to help fight against racial injustice.

That obviously includes the NFL.

However, it will be very hard to believe the league (not the players or anything but specifically the league) itself is fighting to make a difference in racial injustice. If they can't do something as simple as not denying black players when it comes to concussion payments, why would they fight for anything else?

It will be interesting to see what comes of this. But clearly the members of Congress are ready to fight for this one.
