Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce almost became a member of the Dallas Cowboys in the lead-up to the 2013 NFL Draft, but a disastrous interview between Kelce and the Cowboys at the Scouting Combine pretty much put the kibosh on that.

That doesn't mean Kelce didn't ever dream of playing for Dallas, though.

“Dude I grew up a huge Jason Witten appreciator,” Kelce told his brother, Jason Kelce, on the New Heights podcast. “The Cowboys were always the (expletive) boys when they had Deion (Sanders) and Emmitt (Smith). Dude, I used to want to be a star (referencing the Cowboys logo).”

The elder Kelce wasn't buying, it though.

“Dude, stop saying that, you never wanted to be a Cowboy,” Jason said. “Why would you have wanted to be a Cowboy?”

Travis then went on to say that he enjoyed the '90s teams, to which Jason responded by saying that Witten was not on any of those clubs.

Plus, Travis is only 34 years old, so there is no way that he has any sort of legitimate memory of the Cowboys dynasty teams in the '90s.

Travis Kelce has created his own legacy with the Chiefs

He may have wanted to be a Cowboy at one point in his life, but Kelce has carved out an unforgettable legacy as a member of the Chiefs.

Kelce actually missed his entire rookie campaign due to an injury, but in his sophomore season, he immediately flashed his talent by catching 67 passes for 862 yards and five touchdowns. Then, the following year, he made the first of nine straight Pro Bowl appearances, a streak that is still running today.

The University of Cincinnati product has also earned four First-Team All-Pro selections along the way and set the single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end with 1,416, which he achieved back in 2020.

Most importantly, Kelce has been a crucial member of three Super Bowl-winning teams in Kansas City.

Kelce has become one of the most popular players in the NFL due to his play on the field and his infectious personality. It doesn't hurt that he is dating pop star Taylor Swift, either. He absolutely has a career in television after football, which is why he has contemplated retirement recently.

But, Kelce recently signed a contract extension with the Chiefs, so he will be playing for at least another couple of years.

This past season, the veteran hauled in 93 receptions for 984 yards and five scores in 16 games. He then snared 32 balls for 355 yards and three scores during the playoffs and became the all-time reception leader in NFL postseason history.

Kansas City has a chance to win its third straight Super Bowl this coming season. If the Chiefs accomplish that feat, they would be the first team in NFL history to do so.

If they are going to do that, they are going to need another big year from Kelce, who has become Patrick Mahomes' favorite and most reliable target.

And just think: the Cowboys could have had Kelce.
