The Dallas Cowboys clinched the NFC East on Sunday with a big victory over the Washington Commanders. Head coach Mike McCarthy will lead his team into the playoffs for the third straight year. However, rumors about his job security have popped up recently. And owner Jerry Jones addressed these rumors on Sunday.

The rumor goes that McCarthy's future with the Cowboys is tied to how well they do in the playoffs. Jones spoke of his veteran head coach's history with the team with the media. “I think of what he's done and that we've put ourselves in this position over these last three years, I think that does speak for itself,” the Cowboys owner said, via The Athletic's Jon Machota.

Jones went on to acknowledge that Dallas has football left to be played. And McCarthy is a big part in putting the team in a position to contend for a Super Bowl. “We'll see how each game goes,” the Cowboys owner continued, via Machota.

Cowboys playoff history under Mike McCarthy

After finishing 6-10 in 2020, the Cowboys made the playoffs in 2021 with a 12-5 record. Dallas faced the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Round that year. However, they came up short, losing 23-17.

In 2022, the Cowboys once again finished 12-5, though they failed to win the division. Dallas picked up a big victory over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round. In the Divisional Round, though, they lost once again to the 49ers.

This year, Dallas faces a team Mike McCarthy is very familiar with. Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers come to town after clinching a playoff spot in Week 18. McCarthy spent 13 years in Green Bay coaching the Packers. He also won a Super Bowl with them during the 2010 season.

McCarthy is in his fourth year with the Cowboys and is taking his third crack at winning a Super Bowl. It'll certainly be interesting to see how Dallas performs in the playoffs, and how their performance will impact the future of their veteran head coach.
