Daredevil star Charlie Cox didn't think he would return as Matt Murdock after Netflix canceled his Marvel show, GamesRadar reported.

“I really thought that ship had sailed, you know? I thought it was over,” Cox said to the crowd at Wales Comic Con.

“It had been a couple of years since [Netflix's Daredevil had been canceled]. What I didn’t know was there was an embargo on that. So, there was an amount of time – I think it was probably two years – after the show was canceled before Disney and Marvel could approach us,” he explained.

Daredevil and The Defenders

Daredevil ran on Netflix for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. The show was part of the Defenders Saga series along with Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Iron Fist (Finn Jones as Danny Rand) and The Punisher (Jon Bernthal). The four shows spun off from Daredevil and were eventually canceled. All five shows were removed from Netflix in 2022 and found a home to Disney as they are Marvel properties.

“So, during that time, I didn’t know that. I just thought it was over,” Cox continued.

“And Vincent [D'Onofrio], who plays Wilson Fisk, him and I would chat occasionally on the phone. And he would kind of say, ‘I’m sure they’re gonna bring us back.' I’d be on the phone being, like, ‘Mate, the guy’s delusional! He’s got to let it go,'” he added.

However, D'Onofrio would get the last laugh because both he and Cox will be returning to their Daredevil roles in Daredevil: Born Again. Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle (AKA The Punisher) will join them as well.

Unfortunately, Matt's best friend and the other half of the Avocados at Law duo, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), as well as their legal secretary/partner in crime Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) won't be returning. Wilson Fisk's wife, Vanessa, previously played by Ayelet Zurer, has been recast.

Daredevil: Born Again's new directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead said a few weeks ago that they were at Day 0 for the Marvel series overhaul. They spoke about reading up on all things Daredevil before resuming production on the series.

No date has been set on when Daredevil: Born Again will be released.
