While the DC Universe may not hit movie theaters until 2025, the new cinematic universe is set to kick off in 2024 on the small screen with the animated series Creature Commandos. It hadn't been clear when in 2024 when the series was hitting Max, but that has since changed as the series' release window has been confirmed.

Creature Commandos was one of several projects Warner Bros. Discovery touched on during the 2024 Annecy Animation Festival and confirmed the series will be premiering on Max in December 2024, according to ComicBook. DC Studios co-head James Gunn previously confirmed the animated series would be debuting in 2024 as part of the DCU's initial slate, dubbed Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and would kick off the new cinematic universe forming under Gunn and Peter Safran's direction.

Creature Commandos is still on track for a 2024 release according to DCU head James Gunn.

Additionally, there were teases that some members of the Creature Commandos will make an appearance in 2025's Superman, though there was no indication as to who it could be.

From Live Action to Animation

This falls in line with Gunn's statements about casting the DCU's animated series with the intent of having them appear in live action when fitting.

“What we're doing with the DCU is, we are having animation tied directly into live action,” Gunn said during the DCU reveal in 2023. “Television, movies, and games all intertwine within the same universe. We're going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this as well as in other things, some of which we've already cast.”

One member of the Creature Commandos is already confirmed to be making the jump to live action in the near future, and that is Rick Flag Sr. Frank Grillo is set to voice the team's field leader for the animated series and then reprise the role in live action for Peacemaker season two.

The Commandos

Alongside Grillo, the rest of the team's voice cast features Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Sean Gunn pulling double-duty as G.I. Robot and Weasel, the latter of whom audiences met in 2021's The Suicide Squad. In Harbour's case, though, the premiere of Creature Commandos kicks off what will be a busy 12 months in the comic book genre.

Harbour is set to reprise his role as Red Guardian in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for another motely team of misfits, the Thunderbolts. He will also voice the character in season three of What If…? in an episode already teased to include the Winter Soldier and Goliath.

Creature Commandos will premiere on Max in December 2024.
