Patrick Mahomes inked a historic extension with the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason and Houston Rockets star Deshaun Watson could be the next quarterback to sign a new contract.

According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Watson could receive a new deal with the Texans soon.

Mahomes' historic contract with the Chiefs has a chance to be worth $503 million over 10 years. Even though Watson's agent will likely use Mahomes' deal in contract talks, Watson isn't expected to get a deal in the same ballpark.

As Rapoport suggests, Watson's next contract will likely be close to what Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers recently received with the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers, respectively. Both Wilson and Rodgers have current deals that are worth $33.5 million or more in average salary. Furthermore, Wilson's deal with the Seahawks makes him the second highest-paid quarterback in terms of average salary.

Since being taken with the No. 12 pick by the Texans in the 2017 NFL Draft, Watson has been fantastic from under center. After having his rookie campaign cut short, Watson has averaged 4,008 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in the past two years.

In addition to his passing numbers, Watson has contributed 1,233 rushing yards and another 14 touchdowns on the ground. Given his dual-threat ability, Watson is a valuable commodity that the Texans can't afford to lose.

When the Texans questionably traded DeAndre Hopkins this offseason, there was speculation that Watson could force his way out of Houston. On the contrary, it appears that both sides are nearing a deal that would keep him with the organization for years to come. And it appears that the Texans may get him signed for a slight discount compared to what many expected.
