The Miami Dolphins have made it official: they have picked up the fifth-year option of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, thus erasing any remaining rumors about the team parting ways with the signal-caller this offseason.

“Dolphins officially exercised QB Tua Tagovailoa's fifth-year option today,” Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Monday morning.

Prior to this move, the Dolphins had already expressed their desire to pick up that particular option on Tua Tagovailoa.

With his option picked up, Tagovailoa is slated to earn $23.171 million during the 2023 NFL season. The focus now for the Dolphins and Tagovailoa is on whether he can stay healthy for the upcoming campaign, as it's going to be a huge factor in potential contract extension discussions between the two sides.

In the 2022 NFL season, Tua Tagovailoa's health was a major concern, especially with the concussions he sustained. Some had even floated the idea that Tagovailoa should retire from playing football, but that clearly is not on the horizon for the quarterback — for now.

The former Alabama Crimson Tide star quarterback appeared in only 13 games in the 2022 NFL season but amassed 3,548 passing yards and 25 touchdowns with eight interceptions on a 64.8 percent completion rate. He looked comfortable playing under the system of then-first-year head coach Mike McDaniel, who seemingly unlocked the true potential of 3548 in the pros.

The Dolphins had the 11th-ranked scoring offense in the NFL in 2022 with 23.8 points per game and eighth overall in terms of total offense with an average of 357.1 total yards per contest.

Tua Tagovailoa was taken by the Dolphins in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft.
