Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier had multiple pivotal decisions to make over the opening two weeks of this year’s free agency period. Among them, Grier had to decide on whether to go all out to re-sign Trent Sherfield. The former Vanderbilt standout emerged as Miami’s No. 3 option on its wide receiver depth chart last season, as he ranked third among all wideouts on the team in receptions (30) and receiving yards (417).
Grier elected to instead reach an agreement on a one-year deal with now-former New York Jets wide receiver Braxton Berrios. Sherfield wound up signing with the Buffalo Bills.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel kept an eye on Berrios when Miami and the Jets squared off last season. McDaniel sees that Berrios has what it takes to emerge as a key contributor in the Tua Tagovailoa-led Dolphins offense.
“I like a lot of things about Braxton,” McDaniel said at the 2023 NFL Annual Meeting. “I like that he’s a playmaker. I think the more assets that we have in terms of being able to make plays with the ball in their hands.
“You guys know I feel like we have an elite distributor in Tua (Tagovailoa). So if you have scorers, to use a basketball reference, I see Braxton as a scorer, a guy that can make plays with the ball in his hands. So those elements are extremely exciting, as well as really getting a boost for our special teams to make some plays in the kicking game. … So excited to have him and excited to get to work with him soon.”
Berrios is looking forward to making the most out of his upcoming run with the Dolphins, especially as he will share the field with both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
“They’re incredible across the board,” Berrios said during his introductory press conference with the Dolphins. “They’re truly one of the best wide receiver duos in the league, and I can’t wait to get in that room and just watch and learn from them and hear how they see the game or how they see the route against this coverage and all the variations.”
Berrios recorded 107 receptions and 1,085 receiving yards over his four-season run with the Jets.
