Come seasons end, who will lead the Miami Dolphins in rushing? It's not Kenyan Drake, he's long gone. Nor is it Mark Walton (also long gone). How about promising second-year tailback Kalen Ballage? Nope, he's on the injured reserve. What about his replacement, Patrick Laird? Possibly, but not as possible as this candidate: Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick could be on his way to leading the Dolphins in rushing. His 186 ground yards are just 15 behind Walton, who leads the Dolphins but is no longer on the roster — as previously stated.

The 37-year-old quarterback is 51 yards ahead of Ballage. The only real candidate to get close to Fitzpatrick in rushing is Laird, who has 84 yards. Laird will have three games left to attempt to top Fitzpatrick, while the quarterback has the opportunity to top-on yards.

Last week, in a loss to the New York Jets, Fitzpatrick tallied 65 yards on seven attempts. He says rushing is not something he tends to do; he does so if necessary.

I know it looks awkward,” Fitzpatrick said on Wednesday, via the Associated Press. “It certainly feels awkward. It’s not necessarily always my first choice of what I want to do to get yards. But sometimes it’s necessary, and the best thing for the team is for me to take off.”

The Dolphins aren't scheming Fitzpatrick to run. He's not particularly fast or mobile. Instead, he's doing so when it's the last option after seeing nothing open. Nonetheless, that may help him become a leading rusher for the first time in a storied career.
