Ellen DeGeneres will return to Netflix for her last stand-up special, six years after her last, Relatable, Variety reported.
The comedian's second Netflix special will premiere later in the year.
Along with the special, DeGeneres will also go on a multi-city stand-up tour starting June 19 in San Diego.
She said in a statement, “To answer the questions everyone is asking me – Yes, I'm going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life.”
Will Ellen DeGeneres really talk about THAT?
That most likely refers to her contentious exit from her talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, in 2022. Her departure was due to several allegations of fostering a toxic workplace, including accusations that her executive producers were engaged employee harassment.
After the BuzzFeed News report and WarnerMedia's internal investigation, DeGeneres assumed responsibility for the workplace culture. She also apologized to her staff. Three show executives were terminated.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show ran for 19 seasons and won 63 Daytime Emmys. Before hosting the show, DeGeneres starred in the ABC sitcom Ellen, which had five seasons. Her character came out after DeGeneres did in real life. Her character's coming out in 1997 became a seminal television moment. It caused controversy which caused the network to run a parental advisory warning before each episode began.
Article Continues BelowDeGeneres has a storied stand-up comedy career. She has hosted the Emmy three times and the Oscars and the Grammys twice. She is also known for voicing the well-loved Pixar character Dory.
Netflix VP of stand-up and comedy formats Robbie Praw said, “There is nobody quite like Ellen. She is a true legend and pioneer in so many ways. We can't wait to bring fans another one of her hilarious comedy specials later this year.”
The Ellen DeGeneres Show's final episode aired on May 26, 2022. Several of the show's employees, present and former, levied several accusations at both the host and the production executives. One complained that they were fired after they went on medical leave or bereavement days for family funerals.
Other also said that they were told by their direct supervisors not to speak to DeGeneres when they saw her around the office.
These were in direct contrast to the “Be kind” mantra the host espoused. The comedian's bodyguard also relayed his experience with her at the 2014 Oscars where he described her treatment of other people as “demeaning.”
Seeing as the upcoming Netflix stand-up special is her last, I hope she does address the issue sincerely — not just as fodder for jokes.
