Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) is now officially letting users post adult and graphic content on the social media platform, albeit with some restrictions, Deadline reported.

While X has never placed restrictions or outright banned adult content, the updated rules that have been announced now has new rules in place.

The platform's Adult Content page reads: “We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality. We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content for children or adult users who choose not to see it. We also prohibit content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors.”

X official NSFW announcement

“We also do not allow sharing Adult Content in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners,” the page continued.

X also included how it defines adult content. The platform describes it as any “consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal.”

This also extends to any images that are generated by AI, photographic and/or animated content including cartoons, hentai or anime. Examples of said images include “full or partial nudity, such as closeups of genitals, buttocks or breasts” as well as “explicit or implied sexual behavior or simulated acts such as sexual intercourse and other sexual acts.”

A representative from X told Deadline, “We launched Adult Content and Violent Content policies — but what we enforce against has not changed – we launched these policies to clarify our Rules and increase transparency on our enforcement. These policies replace our former Sensitive Media and Violent Speech policies which means we continue to act on these types of content with the exact same philosophy.”

X (formerly Twitter) on content moderation

Elon Musk's X Corp. loses preliminary injunction against California's content moderation requirements

In 2023, Reuters reported that X — then known as Twitter before Musk took over — had an estimated 13% of adult content on the platform.

The adult content policies will now ask regular adult content posters to adjust their media settings so that the images and videos they post are placed behind a content warning, which need to be acknowledged before it is viewed. Another option is to add one-time content warning on individual posts. This already exists in X with the image or video blurred with a content warning label on top of it. The viewer would need to click on it as acknowledgment that they are willing to view NSFW content.

If users fail to mark NSFW content with the appropriate labels, X will do it for the user.

The new policies don't exactly change much when it comes to NSFW content on the platform. Adult and graphic content has long been available for viewing on X. What the new policies don't touch on are posts that contain gore or other objectionable content. The platform has not made any announcement whether they will institute rules governing that.

And it may not since according the X's platform use guidelines, they will staunchly defend and respect the rights of people using their service. However, at the beginning of the year, X lost the preliminary injunction it filed against California's content moderation requirements.
