The Cannes premiere of Furiosa could not have gone better for the latest outing in the world of Mad Max between the seven to eight minute standing ovation and wave of positive reviews from those in attendance. However, it sounds like things came down pretty close to the wire as the film was only completed within a couple weeks of Cannes according to director George Miller.

Miller, along with Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, were on hand for a press conference at Cannes following the film's premiere when the director made the admission, according to Variety. He told the press outlets that editing on Furiosa had only been finished “two and a half weeks” before the screening and he was relieved at how the premiere went.

“We only finished two and a half weeks ago,” Miller said at the conference. “And that was the best sound I've heard. And I was delighted by the screening and, of course, by the response.”

Despite finishing the film so close to its premiere, Miller has previously spoken about how much “smoother” the shoot for Furiosa was compared to 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. He acknowledged Furiosa still had its tough moments, especially with a large portion of the crew dedicated to shooting one of the film's centerpiece action sequences involving a big rig, but things still came together how he had hoped.

A Furious Road to Theaters

The shoot for Mad Max: Fury Road was notorious at the time for the variety of issues plaguing the film's six month shoot.

At the forefront of the issues was the relationship between Fury Road's lead stars, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, with the two reportedly butting heads for a majority of the shoot. The actors would later own up to their behavior and have seemingly buried the hatchet, though it isn't clear if they would ever work together on another project.

Miller also found himself in frequent clashes with Warner Bros. executives, primarily over Fury Road's budget which reportedly went $7 million over during production. Even after the film's success, Miller would still battle with WB's leadership, suing WB for alleged unpaid bonuses stemming from Fury Road's success that would ultimately be settled out of court.

Despite the issues, Miller has stated the relationship with Warner Bros. Discovery has been very good and hinted that both sides hope to keep doing business, which could include another Mad Max sequel.

The Darkest Angel

Keeping the focus on Furiosa, the prequel stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular character originally portrayed by Charlize Theron in Mad Max Fury. The film chronicles her life roughly 15 to 20 years, long before she met Max Rockatansky, after her abduction from the Green Place.

Chris Hemsworth stands opposite Taylor-Joy as the crazed warlord Dementus, the leader of the Biker Horde looking to establish its dominance in the wastelands. This puts Dementus at odds with Immortan Joe, leading to all-out war between the two warlord for control of The Citadel and the resources it is linked to.

Furiosa is scheduled to release in theaters on May 24, 2024.
